Learn how to make delicious Teriyaki Salmon Rice Bowl. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

  • 4 salmon fillets (about 6 ounces each)
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup mirin (Japanese sweet rice wine)
  • 1/4 cup sake
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 cups jasmine rice
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds, for garnish
  • 2 green onions, sliced, for garnish
  • 1 cup steamed broccoli (optional, for serving)

If you’re missing any of these ingredients, don’t worry. You can substitute mirin with a mix of rice vinegar and sugar, and if you’re out of sake, a dry sherry or white wine will work in a pinch. This flexibility is part of what makes this recipe so approachable.

Instructions

  1. Start by preparing the rice. Rinse the jasmine rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch. Combine the rice and water in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-18 minutes until the rice is tender and water is absorbed.
  2. In a small saucepan, combine soy sauce, mirin, sake, brown sugar, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook for 5-7 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and let cool.
  3. Place the salmon fillets in a shallow dish or ziplock bag. Pour half of the teriyaki sauce over the salmon, reserving the rest for serving. Marinate for at least 20 minutes, or up to an hour for deeper flavor.
  4. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the marinated salmon fillets, skin-side down, and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, or until cooked through and caramelized on top. Remember, patience is key here—let the salmon develop a beautiful crust before flipping.
  5. To serve, divide the cooked rice among four bowls. Top with a salmon fillet, drizzle with the reserved teriyaki sauce, and garnish with sesame seeds and green onions. Add steamed broccoli for a pop of color and nutrition if desired.

Cooking should be an enjoyable process, so take your time with each step. I remember the first time I made this dish, I was amazed at how the aromas filled my kitchen, transforming an ordinary evening into a culinary adventure.
