Ingredients
- 1 large sweet potato (about 8–10 inches long)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil or avocado oil
- Salt, to taste
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- Optional toppings (see Serving Suggestions and Pairings)
Substitution suggestions: If you want to switch things up, try using yams instead of sweet potatoes, but keep in mind the flavor will be a bit earthier. For oil, you can substitute coconut oil or even a light butter for a richer flavor. Salt can be swapped for a sprinkle of smoked paprika or cinnamon, depending on whether you’re leaning sweet or savory.
Instructions
- Wash and dry your sweet potato thoroughly. No need to peel it; the skin adds texture and nutrients.
- Using a sharp knife or mandoline, slice the sweet potato lengthwise into 1/4-inch thick slices. Aim for slices that are not too thick or thin, so they crisp nicely but remain tender inside.
- Preheat your toaster or oven. If using a toaster, set it to a medium-high setting. If using an oven, preheat to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- If toasting in a toaster, place 1-2 slices at a time and toast for 3-4 cycles, checking after each round to avoid burning. If baking, brush both sides of the sweet potato slices lightly with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper, then place them on the baking sheet in a single layer.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through, until edges are golden and crispy, and the centers are soft.
- Remove the slices from the toaster or oven and let them cool slightly before adding your favorite toppings.
- Enjoy immediately for the best texture. If you need to keep them warm, cover loosely with foil while you finish preparing toppings.
One trick I’ve learned from years in a busy kitchen is to keep a close eye on the slices as they toast. Sweet potatoes can go from perfectly crisp to charred pretty fast—especially in a toaster. Watching the edges bubble and darken is your cue that they’re ready to come out.
