Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 6 hamburger buns
- Optional: sliced pickles, cheddar cheese slices, and lettuce for serving
Feel free to substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version, and if you fancy a little heat, a dash of hot sauce can add an exciting twist.
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes, breaking up the meat as it cooks.
- Add the chopped onion to the skillet and sauté until translucent, approximately 4 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Reduce the heat to medium and stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, brown sugar, and smoked paprika. Mix well to combine.
- Season with salt and pepper, and let the mixture simmer for about 5-10 minutes until the sauce thickens and clings to the beef, stirring occasionally.
- Toast the hamburger buns under a broiler or in a toaster, if desired, for added texture.
- Spoon the beef mixture onto the bottom halves of the buns. Top with optional pickles, cheese, or lettuce, then cover with the top halves of the buns.
Pro tip: Toasting the buns keeps them from getting too soggy and adds a delightful crunch that complements the rich, savory filling.
