Ingredients
Scale
- 40 saltine crackers (or graham crackers for a sweeter twist)
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt (or to taste)
- Optional: 1/2 cup chopped nuts (pecans or almonds work great)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with aluminum foil, ensuring it covers the sides for easy clean-up.
- Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer on the lined baking sheet. They should fit snugly without overlapping.
- In a medium saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar over medium heat, stirring constantly until it begins to boil. Let it boil for about 3 minutes, until it thickens slightly.
- Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
- Pour the caramel mixture evenly over the crackers, using a spatula to spread it, ensuring each cracker is coated.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 5-7 minutes, or until the caramel is bubbly. Keep a close eye to avoid burning.
- Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips over the top. Let them sit for a minute to melt, then spread the chocolate evenly over the caramel layer.
- Sprinkle with sea salt and, if using, add chopped nuts for added texture and flavor.
- Allow the bites to cool completely at room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to set.
- Once set, break into pieces and enjoy!
