Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 tablespoon heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon sea salt flakes
For a little twist, you can substitute the heavy cream with coconut cream for a hint of tropical flavor, or use brown sugar instead of granulated sugar for a deeper, molasses-like sweetness. It’s these little tweaks that remind me of standing on a stool in my grandmother’s kitchen, learning that cooking is as much about creativity as it is about following a recipe.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
- In a large bowl, cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and powdered sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add in the vanilla extract and mix until incorporated.
- Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing until the dough just comes together.
- Press half of the dough evenly into the prepared pan, creating a firm and even layer.
- Bake the crust in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
- While the crust is baking, combine the caramel sauce and heavy cream in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring until smooth.
- Pour the caramel mixture over the baked crust, spreading it evenly.
- Sprinkle the sea salt flakes over the caramel layer to taste.
- Crumble the remaining dough over the caramel layer, covering most of the surface.
- Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes, or until the top is lightly golden.
- Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares.
As you bake, remember that cooking is a form of storytelling. Each step, each ingredient, is a part of the narrative that makes these bars uniquely yours. Just like the meals I’ve prepared over the years, these bars are an expression of love and care.
