Ingredients
Gathering your ingredients before starting any recipe is part of the ritual I love. It reminds me of standing on that stool in my grandmother’s kitchen, eagerly anticipating the magic that was about to unfold. For these cinnamon rolls, here’s what you’ll need:
- 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/4 cup water
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup pumpkin butter
- 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons cream cheese, softened
- 1 tablespoon milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
If you don’t have pumpkin butter on hand, you can easily substitute with apple butter for a different but equally delicious twist.
Instructions
Let’s get baking! Here’s how you can bring these delightful rolls to life:
- In a large bowl, mix together 2 1/4 cups of flour, the granulated sugar, yeast, and salt.
- In a small saucepan, heat the milk, water, and butter until the butter is melted and the mixture is warm to the touch (about 110°F).
- Add the milk mixture and egg to the flour mixture, stirring until well combined.
- Gradually add the remaining flour, 1/4 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 6-8 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- Once risen, roll the dough into a 16×9 inch rectangle on a floured surface.
- Spread the pumpkin butter evenly over the dough.
- In a small bowl, mix the cinnamon and brown sugar, then sprinkle over the pumpkin butter.
- Starting at a long edge, roll the dough tightly into a log and cut into 12 equal pieces.
- Place the rolls cut-side up in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, cover, and let rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F and bake the rolls for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown.
- While the rolls bake, make the glaze by whisking together the powdered sugar, cream cheese, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Once the rolls are done, let them cool slightly before drizzling the glaze over the top.
Enjoy these rolls warm, when their aroma is simply irresistible, and their taste is a comforting hug after a long day.
