Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 3 tablespoons heavy cream
If you’re out of buttermilk, a great substitute is to mix a cup of milk with a tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar and let it sit for a few minutes. The result is a homemade buttermilk that works like a charm!
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, combine the melted butter, buttermilk, eggs, vanilla extract, and 1/4 cup of maple syrup. Mix until well combined.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the bars tough rather than tender.
- Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- While the bars are baking, prepare the glaze. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, remaining 1/4 cup of maple syrup, and heavy cream until smooth.
- Once the bars are baked and have cooled for about 10 minutes, drizzle the glaze over the top, allowing it to set slightly before cutting into bars.
Remember, patience is key when glazing. Give the bars a little time to cool so the glaze doesn’t just melt right off. And if you’re anything like me, licking the spoon afterward is a must!
