Gathering ingredients is like preparing for an art project—each component plays its part in the masterpiece that is your meal. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 pound ground turkey
- 4 cups sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 1 cup onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Feel free to substitute ground turkey with ground chicken if that’s what you have on hand. And for a little extra flavor, you can add a pinch of nutmeg to the sweet potatoes—it’s a little trick I picked up from my grandmother.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F. Grease a baking dish with a bit of olive oil to prevent sticking.
- In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, sautéing until fragrant, about 3 minutes.
- Add the ground turkey to the skillet, cooking until browned and fully cooked, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
- Stir in the thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper, mixing well to combine.
- Add the chicken broth to the skillet and let it simmer for about 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Meanwhile, in a separate pot, boil the sweet potatoes until tender, about 10-15 minutes. Drain and mash them with a pinch of salt and pepper.
- Layer the ground turkey mix in the prepared baking dish, followed by the mashed sweet potatoes. Sprinkle the cheddar cheese evenly on top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Let it cool for a few minutes before serving. This is where patience truly pays off!
