Ingredients
- 4 large croissants, preferably day-old
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- A pinch of salt
If you’re out of croissants, brioche or challah bread are excellent substitutes. And for a dairy-free version, almond milk and coconut cream work beautifully, keeping the dish creamy and rich.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish lightly with butter or non-stick spray.
- Slice the croissants into large chunks and place them evenly in the baking dish. Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the croissants.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
- Pour the custard mixture evenly over the croissants and chocolate chips, pressing down gently to ensure the croissants soak up the liquid.
- Let the mixture sit for about 15 minutes to allow the croissants to absorb the custard. This is a great time to tidy up or enjoy a warm cup of coffee as you wait!
- Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the custard is set and the top is golden brown.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving. This gives the bake a chance to firm up, making it easier to slice and serve.
As with any recipe, feel free to make it your own. Add a handful of nuts for crunch or use dark chocolate if you prefer a richer flavor. The beauty of cooking is in its flexibility, something my grandma always reminded me of when I was a little girl in her kitchen.
